ADHD
Children and adults with attentional difficulties vary greatly and do not all have the same difficulties. Persons who are predominantly inattentive often ignore details, make careless mistakes, have trouble sustaining attention, problems following instructions or finishing tasks, or appear forgetful or disorganized. Children who are predominantly hyperactive-impulsive are often fidgety, have trouble staying seated, are often in constant motion, tend to talk excessively, and often blurt out answers and interrupt others. Some children demonstrate difficulties in both of these areas. Overall, it is important to note that individuals with ADHD can pay attention. However, they have problems with what they pay attention to, how long they pay attention, and under what circumstances they stay attentive. Their difficulties pervasively affect their life, both at home and at school. People with ADHD generally have difficulties with working memory (the ability to keep information in mind that needs to be used to make decisions and guide behavior) and executive functioning, which includes the abilities to plan, organize, multi-task, prioritize, persist, and self-monitor when completing tasks.
In order to provide a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors in an individual’s situation, we offer a comprehensive ADHD assessment. Our comprehensive evaluation also rules out other issues that may be co-occurring, such as a learning difficulty, or characteristics of autism. This assessment evaluates a child's or adult's history of difficulty, current cognitive functioning, academic performance, current behavior, executive functioning, virtual reality attention testing, and screening for social/emotional issues. If there are no other noted academic or behavioral issues, we also offer an ADHD-only assessment.
CPEA uses the latest technology to assess attention in both children and adults. Continuous performance tests have been used to evaluate attention and distractibility under high and low demand situations. These are typically computerized tests that has a person respond to certain stimuli when it is presented and ignore other stimuli.
Attention Deficit Evaluations
Our Approach
CPEA's pediatric psychologists provide comprehensive ADHD evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults across the Atlanta metro area, with offices in Atlanta, Marietta, and Cumming. Families throughout North Georgia trust CPEA to provide thorough, individualized assessments that go beyond a simple checklist or brief screening.
At CPEA, we take a neurodiversity-affirming approach to ADHD evaluation. This means we assess attention differences not as character flaws or failures of effort, but as a distinct neurological profile with its own strengths, patterns, and needs. Our reports identify not only where a child or adult struggles, but how their cognitive style can be understood and supported - at school, at home, and beyond. The goal is not to fix how your child thinks, but to give your family a clear picture of who they are and what they need to thrive.
An ADHD evaluation at CPEA is structured to capture a complete picture of how attention, executive functioning, and behavior affect your child at home, at school, and in social settings. Testing includes direct cognitive and attention testing with your child, behavior and executive functioning rating scales completed by parents and teachers, developmental history, and computerized attention testing. When academic or social concerns are also present, additional measures are included to rule out co-occurring learning disabilities or autism spectrum characteristics.
Your evaluation concludes with a detailed written report that explains your child's attention and cognitive profile, addresses any co-occurring concerns identified during testing, and provides targeted recommendations for school accommodations, behavioral strategies, and next steps. Your psychologist will review the report with you in a dedicated feedback appointment before the final document is delivered.
